Description: It is not easy to purchase a laptop in the right price range for a child. This review site, as well as others, tends to focus more on expensive devices and those with special features than on basic budget products. This is partly due to reader interest but also because vendors don’t like sending us low-margin, cheap devices that we don’t invest in. This is especially true in the laptop category, where budget devices don't offer much. In recent years, however, there have been some worthy options. These budget-friendly products are what I'll recommend to Ben, a business analytics project manager. Ben is looking for a $400 laptop for his child. He has only two requirements: that the system boot quickly and can play Minecraft. Can my kid play Minecraft on a Chromebook? When someone tells me that they want a budget laptop, I immediately think of Chromebooks. They often offer better specs for the same price as Windows computers. Unfortunately, Minecraft isn't supported on Chrome OS unless you're an education user who can access the Play Store and download the Android app. SERVERS What about on the Acer Aspire 5? Bummer. Bob is left with Windows laptops (we're priced out of Mac territory here). Although it can be difficult to find a decent $400 laptop with Windows 11 running it, it is possible. Acer Aspire is my first choice for Ben. Although it's not the best-priced device, you won't find better specs for the money. For just $379, the Aspire 5 comes with a 14-inch, 1080p display, an Intel Core i5-1135G7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. And since it uses an 11th Gen chip, the Aspire benefits from Iris Xe graphics, which will be more than enough to run Minecraft at decent frame rates. So what's the deal? The Aspire 5 comes with a lot of bloatware, as is the norm for budget PCs. The webcam is also terrible and the design with its thicker display bezels is not modern. The webcam's large size (0.7 inch thick and 3.2pound isn’t exactly thin nor light anymore) and its plastic touchpad are the bigger problems. Maybe an HP Stream Many people recommend the HP Stream, but not many people like to play on an 11-inch screen. So I'm going ahead and nixing it. Although there is a 14-inch version, the screen is very low-resolution and the processor is not powerful enough. Minecraft I'd rather try to find a deal (like this one!) on the Lenovo IdeaPad. It may be more than Ben and his son require, but it's still worth the $330 price. Minecraft on Surface? Ben mentioned that he'd been looking into Surface devices and that he would love the Surface Laptop SE (not just for CDW). I will counter the SE with a Surface Laptop Go, currently priced at $350. Although the specs are not great (4GB RAM, 64GB storage), you won't find a laptop with more premium features at this price. If Ben can swing it, the new Surface Laptop Go 2 starts at $600 (I know, that's quite a bit extra) and comes with twice the storage and a faster processor. Would you recommend something else?
