Description: Hack attack on Sony and Xbox 20 January 2015 Lizard Squad hacking group was attacked in a scandalous attack that exposed the entire database of users. The group claimed to have shut down the PlayStation and Xbox gaming networks during the Christmas period. Then it launched a website that allowed anyone who paid for its software to flood other websites with data. The attack that exposed the list of customers is only one of the many attacks directed at the group and its tools. Address list Brian Krebs, an investigative journalist, broke the story about the hacking of the Lizard Stresser database. The Stresser allowed those who paid for it to load websites or remove users from their sites by flooding them with information. Minecraft Server Lists Krebs didn't name the person who accessed the information, but he said that he had a dump of the entire roster with 14,241 individuals who signed up. Anyone who visited the Stresser website was warned of the attack via a message on the main page's login box that advised users to change their passwords that they used when they signed up. Krebs said in a blog post that the Lizard Squad had not taken enough measures to protect the login and contact details provided by users. "All registered usernames and passwords were stored in plain text," said Mr Krebs noting that only a few hundred of the users who signed up paid for access to the site. Tech news site Ars Technica also got hold of the database dump, which was posted for a brief time on the Mega file-sharing system. It revealed that the majority of those who used it were gamers who were trying to stop their competitors from playing a specific game. Minecraft servers were a popular target of the Stresser users according to the report. Ars Technica said the dump of the database could create problems for anyone who had used it as the IP addresses of a lot of them were obscured and could, with a bit of work, be recovered. The theft of the database comes just after other computer experts took apart the tools Lizard Squad has been using. One of them exposed the source code of a program used to attack people on IRC chat networks. Eric Zhang, a computer science student was able to swiftly identify the names of all those who registered for Stresser using an extremely simple script. He stated, "That took only 10 minutes." He stated that he wasn't surprised that the entire database was stolen since he had a look at the site and noticed that public access to the server behind it was open. He stated that the site was managed by a person with no formal expertise in software engineering. "Most of what they are doing isn't very impressive," he said. "Anyone could accomplish this. It's all it takes is time. Mr Krebs stated that Lizard Squad was being targeted by security professionals who were irritated by their sudden fame. Minecraft servers He added: "There seems to be an overall feeling in the security research community that these guys are way over their heads and that if we can't bring to justice a group of teenagers in Western nations who are rubbing it in everyone's faces it's a sad state of affairs." He said that the group was able to survive because of the time it took for investigations to be conducted and members found. Recent Lizard Squad arrests seemed to have only resulted in the capture of some of its hangers on but left some core members free.
