Description: The Mirai botnet caused serious troubles in the fall of 2017 in the beginning, hijacking a number of IoT devices to create a historically massive Distributed Denial-Of-Service (DDoS) attack on KrebsOnSecurity's site in September, before removing large portions of the internet one month later. But who's responsible for making the malware? Brian Krebs, security researcher, set out to find the source of the malware after his site went down. He found several sources and evidence that suggest Paras Jha (a Rutgers University student who is also the owner of DDoS protection provider Protraf Solutions). The source code of the Mirai botnet was released by the attacker, who was referred to under the name Anna Senpai, around a week later. This led to other copycat attacks. It also provided Krebs with the first clue in their long-running search to find Anna Senpai's true identity. Krebs created a glossary of terms and names that are cross-referenced, as well as a partial map of relationships. All about video games Although the tale is more than 8000 words, it is worth reading to learn how botnet wranglers make their profits by securing zombie device armies on unsuspecting victims. The sources that pointed Krebs to Anna Senpai's identity were involved in the use of botnets for the benefit of clients in shadows, and unleashing them on security firms that protect lucrative Minecraft servers that host thousands of gamers. Players will leave the server if their online gaming experience is affected, for example, due to annoying DDoS attacks or repeated DDoS attacks. This provides servers with a reason to switch to security services which can protect them and, in this instance the same security providers that orchestrated the botnet attacks. Krebs sources claim that Krebs' security site was attacked in the botnet war after publishing information in September, which led to the arrests of two hackers responsible for the Israeli "vDos" attack service. Anna Senpai was allegedly bribed by angry clients to unleash Mirai onto KrebsOnSecurity which affirmed their interest in the security firm.
